So you have got over the Christmas rush, survived New Years and moved on from those January blues. So now is a better time than ever to dip your toes back in to the job market. With a number of roles available and waiting to be filled, there won’t be a better time than now to grab that next great move.

We are now looking to speak with both support and supervising pharmacists who are looking for the next move in their career. If you want to have a chat about any potential career change or just want to see what the market is like, get in touch with Garry, Paolo or David and we would be more than happy to have a chat with you.

Top of the list this week is a Supervising Pharmacist position in Co. Cork. This is a great opportunity for someone to develop their managerial skills as you will be required to manage the team in the pharmacy.

As pharmacists begin to vaccinate patients against winter flu, a significant number of them have, according to the IPU (Irish Pharmacy Union) reported difficulties with the official system. These difficulties include being unable to access the PCRS browser through internet explorer, missing batch numbers on private vaccines, incorrect GP details and problems validating GMS and PPS numbers correctly.

The IPU said that there had been daily contact between them and the HSE PCRS to try to resolve these problems as and when they arose. However, the HSE said that the HSE PCRS website, used by pharmacists as part of the flu vaccine campaign is fully functional and has not experienced any “down time” or difficulties since going live. The IPU said that, while it accepts that there will always be teething problems with new IT initiatives, that it was very disappointed by the manner in which the HSE browser was implemented and that its dissatisfaction with the service will be raised at the next Joint Consultative Group Meeting.

Pharmacies are joining the online shopping revolution by using their websites to sell their products and services. With more and more of us logging on all the time to purchase everything from groceries to computer parts, it’s no surprise that e-commerce is also hitting the pharmacy sector. So, the next time you’re sick, you can log on and do your purchases, rather than leave home to go to the chemist.
It is now possible to get prescriptions online, for example on drthom.ie. The website, which is run by three London-based doctors who are registered with the Irish Medical Council, allows you to fill in an online questionnaire, which is then assessed by one of the doctors. For €30, they will respond to you via e-mail, and post out a prescription to you if required, which you can fill in your local pharmacy. While you may be able to actually get a prescription online, you won’t be able to get it filled from the comfort of your own home. Under Irish law, the sale of prescription-only medicines by mail order is prohibited, and this prohibition includes internet supplies of prescription-only medicines.
As with many products, buying online can save you money – as long as you are aware how much the product usually costs and factor in delivery costs.But there are savings to be made.

Three women armed with a baseball bat and a steak knife managed to fend off a drug addict with a screw-driver robbing their pharmacy, a court has heard. A known drug addict pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery of Tracys Pharmacy on February 2 this year. Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard how one of the victims, Matilda Allen, grabbed a wooden bat while another used a steak knife to scare him. One of the women then followed him around town until she saw a Garda patrol car and asked them to arrest him.

Garda John Quirke said that Matilda showed “considerable fortitude” and she told gardaí that she hadn’t suffered any “ill effects” from the attempted robbery. Judge Martin Nolan described the incident as “frightening” but commended the three victims for showing a “great degree of fortitude and hardiness”.

Pharmaconex has worked with Matilda Allen for years, and we know that she is an heroic pharmacist. Go Matilda!

Pharmacists have cautioned against proposals to increase the Prescription Levy for medicines from 50 cent to €2 and to introduce a €50 charge for a Medical Card.
Darragh O’Loughlin, President of the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU), said, “An increase of this magnitude – effectively quadrupling the current charge – could present a significant barrier for people who are already facing real financial hardship and would lead to many of these patients simply not taking the medicines prescribed for them. Even the current 50 cent levy has given rise to difficulties for some vulnerable patients. Any increase in costs would increase the number of patients struggling to continue taking their medicines.”
The IPU has called on the Minister for Health to introduce Medicines Use Reviews to make sure patients are getting the full benefit from their medicines and to ensure patients are taking only those medicines which are clearly necessary for their treatment. This would ensure better outcomes for patients and reduced downstream healthcare costs.
The IPU has also called for vulnerable patients to be exempt from the Levy and have highlighted their concerns to the Government in two recent submissions, including a Submission to the Department of Finance on Budget 2012.
In the submission, the IPU advocates for the following patients to be exempt from the Levy:
•	Patients in residential care settings;
•	Patients with intellectual disabilities;
•	Patients receiving treatment under the Methadone Treatment Scheme in respect of other medication that they may require;
•	Patients receiving psychiatric medicines;
•	Homeless patients including those in homeless shelters; and
•	Palliative care patients and other patients who have their medicines changed on a daily/weekly basis.
Last year, prescription charges were abolished in Northern Ireland and Wales.
Mr. O’Loughlin said, “In extreme cases some patients are choosing not to take their medication at all. If people don’t comply with their medicine regimes, it could end up costing the State more.”
Pharmacists are responsible for collecting the Prescription Levy on behalf of the HSE, and, as the levy is automatically deducted from payments to pharmacists, pharmacists don’t have any discretion as to whether they should collect the levy or not.

The programme will run over a three-year period, with 65 pharmacies being recruited and staff trained to provide needle exchange. The programme will target areas outside Dublin and will be evaluated over its lifetime, with programme reviews taking place anually.

The pharmacies taking part in the initiative were chosen either through HSE recommendation or through those pharmacies, which expressed an interest in the scheme. Pharmacy participation is on an opt-in basis and locations and gaps will be constantly monitored.
